ทันใดนั้นพระเยซูตรัสกับเขาว่า“ทำใจให้ดีไว้เถิด เราเอง อย่ากลัวเลย” (มัทธิว 14:27)

ลูกสาววัยสองขวบของดิฉันยืนลังเลอยู่บนชายฝั่งห่างจากน้ำริมอ่าวไม่ถึงคืบและ
บอกว่า “หนูกลัว” น้าของเธอจึงปลอบว่า “ไม่เป็นไรหรอก ลงมาแค่ก้าวเดียวเท่านั้น”
เธอจึงเดินลงน้ำก้าวเล็กๆ น้านิกกี้บอกอีกว่า “ทีนี้เดินลึกอีกนิดนะ” เธอจึงเดินลึกลง
ไปอีกก้าวและอีกก้าวไปจับมือน้าของเธอด้วยความมั่นใจ “ลึกอีกนิด อีกนิดนะ” ไม่นาน
ลูกสาวของดิฉันก็ยืนอยู่ในน้ำลึกแค่สะเอวและตะโกนด้วยความตื่นเต้นว่า “หนูลงน้ำ
ได้แล้ว หนูลงน้ำได้แล้ว”
ดิฉันรู้สึกอิจฉาลูก ที่จริงดิฉันหลอกตนเองมาตลอดด้วยความรู้สึกอย่างเดียวกัน
ว่าชนะแล้วเพราะกลัวจนไม่กล้าเดินตามพระเยซูลงไปให้ลึกอีกนิด บ่อยแค่ไหนหนอ
ที่ดิฉันยืนอยู่บนฝั่งของความรู้สึกไม่มั่นคง ความไม่มั่นคงนี่แหละที่ทำให้เรากลัวเอา
มากๆ จนต้องยืนบนฝั่งและเตือนตนเองให้ระวังคนอื่นนินทาว่าร้าย แต่พระคริสต์ไม่
เคยกล่าวร้ายเราแม้แต่คำเดียว พระเยซูไม่ทรงต้องการให้เราเอาแต่ยืนอยู่บนฝั่ง แต่
ทรงหนุนใจเราให้ออกมายืนอยู่ตรงที่เราจะพบความเข้าใจลึกซึ้งและเอาชนะความกลัวได้
อย่างแท้จริง โดยตรัสว่า “ลึกอีกนิด อีกนิดนะ” ดิฉันอยากมีความรู้สึกเหมือนลูกสาว
อายุ2 ขวบที่ลงเล่นคลื่นในน้ำอย่างสนุกสนานเบิกบานใจ คือเอาชนะทั้งความกลัว
ความสงสัยและความรู้สึกไม่มั่นคงสิ่งที่นำเราไปสู่ความยินดีเหมือนเด็กๆ ได้ก็คือต้องกล้าก้าวลึกลง
อีกนิดเดียว

My two-year-old daughter stood hesitantly on the shore, the Gulf Coast waters inches away from her feet. “I’m scared,” she said adamantly. “It’s okay,” her aunt coaxed, “take just one step.” She took one baby step. “Okay,” said Aunt Nikki, “now just a little deeper.” She took another step and another while trustingly holding her aunt’s hand. “A little deeper, now a little deeper.” In a few moments my daughter was standing triumphantly waist deep in the shallow water. “I’m in! I’m in!” she shouted excitedly.
I envied her, thinking of all the times I’ve cheated myself of that same feeling of victory because I’m too scared to follow Jesus out a little deeper. How often have I chosen to stay up on the shore of insecurity? Our insecurities may make sense to us, but they keep us on the shore by constantly reminding us of the negative judgments of others. But Christ passes no such judgments. He does not want us to stay on the shore but coaxes us out to where we can find true intimacy and victory. “Just a little deeper,” he says. I want to feel the same joy my two-year-old felt as she jubilantly played in the waves the feeling of victory over my fears and doubts and insecurities. But the path to that kind of joy lies out a little deeper.
Prayer: Dear Lord, grant us the courage to follow you out into a deeper Christian experience today. Amen.
